Axolotls

Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

A fully aquatic salamander with a charming, perpetually smiling face and feathery external gills, the Axolotl is one of the most unique aquatic pets available. Hardy and long-lived, it's best kept in a cool, species-only tank with a sand substrate and plenty of hiding spots.

• Minimum Tank Size: 60L per axolotl, with sand substrate and hiding spots
• Temperature: 16–20°C (must stay cool — no heater)
• pH Range: 6.5–8.0
• Water Hardness: Moderate to hard
• Temperament: Peaceful but will eat anything that fits in its mouth
• Diet: Axolotl pellets, earthworms, frozen bloodworms, blackworms
• Max Size: 20–30cm
• Lifespan: 10–15+ years
• Care Level: Easy to moderate (needs cool water and pristine conditions)

Tank Mates: Best kept alone or with other axolotls of similar size; avoid fish (may be eaten or nip gills).

Origin: Mexico — Lake Xochimilco (captive-bred for the hobby)
