Malawi Eye Biter (Dimidiochromis compressiceps)

A fascinating and highly specialised Lake Malawi predator, the Malawi Eye Biter has a distinctive long, laterally compressed body designed for ambush hunting. It uses vegetation and cover to approach prey before striking, making it one of the most unusual predatory cichlids available to experienced aquarists.

Care at a Glance:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300L+ for an adult; a long aquarium with substantial open swimming space is essential
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH Range: 7.5–8.8
  • Temperament: Predatory; generally manageable with appropriately sized tank mates
  • Diet: Carnivore — quality predator/cichlid pellets, prawns, mussel, mysis and other meaty foods
  • Max Size: 23–25cm
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years
  • Care Level: Advanced

Tank Mates: Large Lake Malawi Haps and other robust African cichlids of a similar size. Avoid small fish, as the Malawi Eye Biter is a natural predator and may consume tank mates small enough to fit in its mouth.

Origin: Endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it is typically found around shallow areas with submerged vegetation and sandy or rocky habitats. Its unusual body shape allows it to remain concealed while waiting to ambush prey.
