Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

A fascinating aquatic amphibian known for its wide smile, feathery external gills and unique ability to regenerate parts of its body. Axolotls spend their entire lives underwater and are best kept in a cool, spacious aquarium with gentle filtration, clean water and plenty of floor space to explore.

Care at a Glance:

• Minimum Tank Size: 75L for one adult, with a larger footprint preferred
• Temperature: 16–20°C; avoid temperatures above 22°C
• pH Range: 6.5–8.0
• Temperament: Peaceful, but may eat small tank mates
• Diet: Carnivore — earthworms, bloodworms, quality axolotl pellets and other suitable meaty foods
• Max Size: 20–30cm
• Lifespan: 10–15 years with proper care

Tank Mates: Best kept alone or with other similarly sized axolotls. Avoid fish, shrimp and other small animals that may be swallowed or may nip at their delicate external gills. Different-sized axolotls should also be housed carefully to reduce the risk of cannibalism.

Origin: Endemic to the lakes and canals around Mexico City, Mexico. The species is critically endangered in the wild, while the axolotls available in the aquarium hobby are generally captive-bred.
